Stories of victims of gender-based violence in the state would soon find a world audience, which could help check the trend.

City-based activist Shilpi Singh has been invited to visit five cities in US to interact with victims of gender-based violence.

The 32-year-old director of the non-government organisation (NGO), Bhoomika Vihar, which works for rescuing trafficking victims in the state, has got the opportunity under the International Visitor Leadership Programme, which is sponsored by the US Department of State.

Shilpi, a member of the sectoral innovation council, Union ministry of women and child development, would visit Washington, Detroit, Atlanta, Minneapolis and Portland from this week till end-July. She would meet bureaucrats, cops and NGO workers involved in programmes on preventing violence against women and children.

Apart from Shilpi, activists from some other countries have also been selected under the programme and they would tour the five cities together.

On Monday, Shilpi met US government officials to get an overview of how its various departments work in tandem to fight against gender violence.

Shilpi said getting selected for the programme was a big achievement for her.

"The programme would allow me to exchange ideas on how to support children and adolescents, who are victims of gender-based violence in a better way. The best thing is that I would meet people of every section working on this issue, right from government officials to NGO people and cops, who are directly engaged with the victims. Things which I would learn would definitely help me back home," Shilpi told The Telegraph over phone from US. She would also meet victims during the visit.

Talking about other issues she would cover, Shilpi said: "During the programme, we would be taught how men could be involved in campaigns to end gender violence. Exploring the health impacts and preventative programmes to address gender violence, intimate partner violence and sexual assault would also be covered."

Shilpi said Bhoomika Vihar rescues at least 10-12 victims of trafficking every year. "We also run Beti Bachao Andolan to protect girl child rights. We hold various events at schools and colleges and ask people to stop female foeticide and tell them about various rights of girl children," she said.
