Jamalpur (Munger): Government Railway Police in Jamalpur have identified the gang that hit the Bhagalpur-bound Danapur Intercity Express on Friday night and robbed passengers of valuables worth over Rs 3 lakh.

At least 70 passengers were in the general chair car compartment when a group of 10 criminals boarded the intercity train around 9.05pm at Kajra station in Lakhisarai district.

Armed with country-made pistols and sharp knives, the gang assaulted the passengers and snatched their belongings. At least 12 people were injured. "The entire operation was over in 20-25 minutes and the criminals fled after disconnecting the vacuum brake of the train," said Sandeep Kumar from Bhagalpur who was in the compartment.

The injured passengers were treated at Jamalpur when the train arrived there 10pm. The other passengers protested against lack of security and escort party leading to such attacks on trains.

Srikant Mandal, an inspector-rank GRP official in the Jamalpur circle, said: "We have some evidence that a gang from Begusarai and Lakhisarai were involved in the incident. The same gang had in January looted passengers on the Rajgir-Jamalpur passenger."
