Patna, April 21: Strict invigilation during MCom exams proved detrimental for some teachers of Patna University who were attacked and abused by a group of students and goons.
The varsity students, along with some outsiders, assaulted the invigilators and teachers of Patna College, threatening them with dire consequences, for not allowing a student to cheat in the exams.
The incident took place at room number 5 of the examination hall at Patna College.
An FIR in this connection has been lodged against two students and an outsider at the local Pirbhore police station. Teachers have demanded immediate expulsion of the two students for at least three years.
Rajesh Kumar, a student of MCom, was allegedly cheating during the ongoing examination when Saroj Dubey, professor-cum-invigilator, caught him red-handed.
Apart from Dubey, two more invigilators — Awadhesh Kishore Prasad Singh and P.N. Das — were also in the room on examination duty.
Rajesh allegedly got angry after being caught with the chit and started an argument with the invigilators.
He was supported in the act by a friend — Rahul Kumar — who was seated behind him. The argument turned ugly when both Rajesh and Rahul allegedly started abusing the teachers, threatening them with dire consequences if they did not allow them to cheat.
“The incident took place during the second sitting of the exam at 2.30pm. Despite abusing and threatening the teachers, the boys were allowed them to write the exams. Their chits were, however, taken away by the invigilators. While the argument was going on, Rahul called up some of his friends from his mobile phone, asking them to remain present at the college gate at 5 pm after the examination got over,” said Randhir Kumar Singh, general secretary, Patna University Teachers’ Association and a teacher at Patna College.
Singh said that Rahul had secretly hidden a mobile phone while appearing for the examination.
Rahul called up one Jamshed Alam, an outsider known for creating nuisance on the university campus, asking him to be present with more people at the college gate. At 5pm, Jamshed, along with his two friends, suddenly entered the examination hall and started abusing and beating up the three invigilators. Rajesh and Rahul joined them in his act.
“The students were threatening the teachers with dire consequences. All the three invigilators were roughed up by the goons and the students. After a while, when more teachers joined in, the goons fled the spot,” Randhir Kumar Singh said.
Patna University vice-chancellor Sudipto Adhikari assured that strict action will be taken if charges are found to be true against the students.
