Patna, Dec. 3: The state cabinet today approved the surrender-cum-rehabilitation policy for Left wing rebels.
“Left wing rebels, who surrender with arms, would be covered under the new policy meant for their rehabilitation. They will be given a lumpsum amount for surrendering before the authorities concerned,” cabinet secretary Brajesh Mehrotra told the reporters in a post-cabinet briefing.
The state government has formulated a new policy after getting a proposal from the central government to prepare such a policy, Mehrotra said, adding that the earlier surrender policy was announced on November 23, 2001.
Sources said the old policy didn’t get good response from those who were supposed to surrender. According to the new policy, if a senior leader, who is the member of the state committee, regional committee and politburo, surrenders with arms would be given Rs 2.5 lakh, while those belonging to the middle and lower hierarchy would get Rs 1.5 lakh for leading a peaceful life.
“The money would be kept as fixed deposit in the bank for three years,” he said, adding that the rebels surrendering with weapons would get an amount in lieu of the weapon.
