The media needs to remind political parties around the year the promises that they make in their manifestos during elections. This would ensure the implementation of the manifestos.

Experts, including social activists and people’s representatives, on Wednesday shared such views at a workshop on electoral reforms and the role of media. Non-government organisation Association for Democratic Reforms conducted the seminar.

Pushparaj, a participant at the meet, said: “Criminal cases filed against ministers are only highlighted by the media during the elections. The media should highlight tainted ministers so that they are unable to continue in their positions. Speedy trials should also be organised to ensure that such tainted ministers are brought to book.”

Social activist Shashi Shekhar said the media should report on election manifestos of political parties round-the-year and remind the leaders of their promises to the people. “Political leaders often forget the promises they make during campaigning. The election manifesto is a proof of their promises. The media should highlight them from time to time,” he said.
