The biker Aamir just sped past the flying Hrithik.

If you haven’t booked your weekend seats for a Dhoom 3 show, the wait to watch it could be long, really long.

Opening on Friday amid a flurry, the Aamir Khan-starrer surpassed all box office records of Hindi cinema by collecting Rs 21,07,460 on Day One. The flag-bearer of the record was so far Krrish 3, which had collected Rs 18,10,429 on its day of release in Patna.

Not only the first day collections, the Aditya Chopra film has done something that no film has been able to achieve so far. Every show of Dhoom 3 has been sold out till Monday, leaving nothing for late risers.

The bike thriller has chased past the positions of the famous five of 2013 — Krrish 3, Besharam, Chennai Express, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Aashiqui 2 — by miles.

Compared to Krrish 3, which was slotted for 32 shows in Patna, Dhoom 3 opened in 28 shows — Cinepolis (15), Regent Fun Cinemas (5), Mona (4) and Elphinstone (4). Despite the less number of shows, Dhoom 3 has been able to pull a grand opening at the time when Bollywood is heavily dependant on availability of screens.

However, industry watchers are also giving due credit to the recent rise in ticket prices that have spurred the collections. All the theatres have increased the price by Rs 20-Rs 30. But Aamir remained the driving force in the film, especially when you have a double whammy.

R.N. Das, a film critic and the adviser of Cine Society, Patna, said: “The film was planned and designed to be a blockbuster. That’s the reason why you’ll find many surprises in the film such as Aamir playing a negative role. For the first time he has a double role. With two Aamirs and one Katrina in the fray, distributors and theatre owners would love to mint money by increasing the ticket prices.”

Ignoring the economics of ticket pricing, fans have given Dhoom 3 a thumbs up for living up to their expectations.

“Can you believe I just saw two Aamir Khans back in the theatre. Charming and wicked Aamir is a must watch. Katrina, too, has come a long way from Boom (2003). She looked stunning. I want to watch the film again but tickets are not available. They are available only after Monday and I won’t get an off from office,” said Policelines Colony resident Mohammad Akram, while coming out of Regent.
