Patna, Feb. 15: Sardar Patel Girls’ hostel at Ashok Rajpath in the capital, where a 17-year-old girl died under mysterious circumstances on Sunday night, wore a deserted look today as most of the boarders moved out of the premises after the incident.
Chandni Kumari, a student of Intermediate Science (ISc) at AN College, died at the Patna Medical College and Hospital.
Chandni’s parent had alleged that Nikita, her roommate, had poisoned the teenager to death.
Though the police have registered a case of unnatural death, they are also probing a possible murder angle, said police sources.
Asrar Ahmed, station house officer, Pirbohore police station, said they were awaiting the post-mortem report. “The postmortem of the deceased was conducted yesterday. We are awaiting the report to ascertain the cause of the death,” he said.
Chandni’s parents had alleged in their complaint that that Nikita had called Chandni back to the hostel from her home in Sasaram, telling her over the phone that she had consumed sleeping pills and was not feeling well.
Chandni’s cousin Pammi, who stays in the same hostel had alleged yesterday that something was fishy as she appeared fine till the evening.
A caretaker at the hostel said that Nikita left the building yesterday after she was interrogated by the cops. A team of police officers had come here yesterday and they questioned her. However, when they returned after an hour, she was nowhere to be found. She probably left with her local guardian and did not inform anyone. Her mobile phone is also switched off since then,” he said.
Sources said there were about 75 girls in the hostel and over 55 of them vacated their rooms on Monday and Tuesday. The remaining boarders talked in a hushed manner about how Nikita and Chandni mostly kept to themselves and hardly interacted with anyone else.
The duo stayed in a two-seater room on the third floor of the hostel.
“They had been living in the hostel for past seven months. Though I stay in the room just beside theirs, I never spoke to them. They kept to themselves and came out only to have food or to go to the washroom or when they had to go somewhere else. They did not seem to be friendly,” said a girl requesting anonymity.
The hostel inmates, however, also said that they found nothing unusual about the relationship of the two girls. “They were always together but then it happens between friends. I don’t think there was anything unusual about them,” she said.
Girls also said that Chandni looked pale since last few weeks as she was suffering from jaundice.
“She looked very weak and we heard people saying that she may slip into coma if she travelled too much,” said another girl.
