Gaya, July 7: Magadh University syndicate has decided to form a three-member committee to resolve the issue of promotions of teachers and non-teaching employees of the university.

The university syndicate met in the state capital today. The issue of the teaching and the non-teaching employees has plagued the colleges affiliated to the university, which had its headquarters in Bodhgaya, for a long time.

The syndicate also put its final seal to launch the semester system in the post-graduate courses from the forthcoming session beginning this month.

Magadh University public relations officer Shamsul Islam told The Telegraph that the new syllabus of the 24 postgraduate departments for the new semester system is being prepared. While the syllabus of some departments has been completed, other departments are on their way.

The syndicate also decided that the vice-chancellor would soon look into the preparation of syllabus in the remaining departments. The syndicate also approved the proposal to constitute a committee for fresh selection of principals of 27 constituent colleges of the university.

Following a petition filed by Vimal Prasad Singh — a teacher in political science at AN College, Patna, the single bench of Justice Jaya Nandan Singh at Patna High Court had quashed the appointment of 27 principals.

The principals filed an appeal against the verdict in a double-bench of the high court and subsequently in the Supreme Court but could not get relief in terms of stay over their appointment. The apex court directed to ensure fresh appointments of principals from among the 251 applicants who applied for the post after an advertisement in December 2009 and not to invite fresh applications.

The three-member committee would now ensure the selection of principals in the wake of the order, within the stipulated timeframe.

There was a deficit of around Rs 30 lakh in the state government’s allotment against the three-month’s salary of teaching and the non-teaching employees for March, April and May. The syndicate decided to prepare a budget and send it to the state government with a demand to release the balance amount.

University vice-chancellor Arun Kumar presided over the syndicate meeting that also approved the earlier proceedings of different statutory bodies like academic council, affiliation committee, building committee, finance committee, purchase committee and other bodies.
