Patna: Lack of e-way bills has led to seizure of goods worth about Rs 2 crore by teams of the commercial taxes department which carried out raids on the office premises and godowns of transporters at over 50 places in Bihar.
The raids were conducted on Monday.
The e-way bill system came into effect in April this year. Under the norms, traders need to generate an e-way bill for intra-state transportation of goods if their value is Rs 2 lakh or more. In case of inter-state trade, the document is required for transportation of goods worth Rs 50,000 or more. Transporters too can generate e-way bills at their end.
A senior official of the commercial taxes department told The Telegraph on Tuesday: "Raids are still on at seven godowns and the actual value of seized goods is likely to increase. Also, valuation of goods of seven trucks which had been parked near one godown would be done."
The raids had been conducted in Patna, Muzaffarpur, Purnea, Bhagalpur and Gaya among other places.
Speaking about the likely action that would follow, the official said: "In case the consigner or consignee comes forward claiming the transported goods, penalty value would be equal to the GST amount applicable on the seized goods. In case no one turns up to claim the goods, the transporters would have to pay the penalty. In this case it would be equal to the value of the seized goods."
