Katihar, May 11: Two youths, a girl and a boy, committed suicide in the town in the past 24 hours.

The 22-year-old girl was found hanging from the ceiling of her room under the jurisdiction of Town police station on Monday. The 25-year-old boy is suspected to have consumed poison at his P&T Chowk home under the jurisdiction of Sahayak police station.

Police claimed the boy died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Siliguri of neighbouring Bengal. The station house officer (SHO) of Sahayak police station, Mukesh Kumar, said: "Whether Satesh Singh consumed poison or died of a disease is under investigation."

Sources maintained that the matter was being hushed up because Satesh's father, Prabhas Singh, runs a canteen in the Town police station.

The girl, a source claimed, was under depression after the youth (not Satesh) with whom she had an affair got married to a different girl last week. Even the police indicated something similar. "Prima facie, it appears that the girl was in love with a youth who got married recently following which she slipped into depression and committed suicide," said the Town police station SHO, Kedar Nath Singh.
