Back-to-back resignation by senior doctors has crippled services at Shri Krishna Medical College and Hospital.

The latest to put in the papers was Dr Nishi Bala, the senior resident doctor of the gynaecology department who resigned on Tuesday citing excessive work pressure. With this, the hospital in Muzaffarpur is left with 38 doctors as against the 110 sanctioned posts.

Dr Bala is the third senior doctor of the hospital to resign in the last fortnight.

Hospital superintendent Dr G.K. Thakur admitted that it was becoming difficult to ensure smooth functioning of the health hub with so many doctors resigning. “We might be compelled to close certain departments and curtail emergency services,” he said.

In her resignation letter to Thakur and health department principal secretary Vyasji, Dr Bala wrote that could not cope with the “immense work pressure”. She said: “The workload at the hospital, including the gynaecology ward, has increased too much.”

Gynaecology is one of the worst-hit departments at the health hub in the district. It now has only three doctors against 12 sanctioned posts. At least 50 patients are admitted daily to the emergency ward of the hospital with gynaecological problems besides routine admissions of about 300 into the outpatient department, head of the gynaecology department Dr Kumari Vibha said.

At the end of August, two senior resident doctors — Asmita Singh and Arun Kumar Singh of gynaecology and orthopaedic departments of Shri Krishna Medical College and Hospital — respectively put in their papers.

The hospital superintendent, Dr Thakur, said he had asked the state government to fill up the vacant posts at the earliest. He said he would meet the principal secretary of the health department later this week to inform him about the “alarming situation prevailing at the hospital”.

On Tuesday evening, Dr Thakur requested civil surgeon Madhu Gupta to deploy two doctors for emergency services at the hospital.
