Extending support to the junior doctors of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), the postgraduate medical students of Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) have decided to proceed on indefinite strike from Wednesday midnight.
Sources said junior doctors at Nalanda Medical College and Hospital in the capital are also contemplating on following the path of their counterparts in PMCH and DMCH.
The PMCH junior doctors are on strike from June 14 following a brawl with the attendants of a suspected acute encephalitis syndrome patient. The relatives of the dead patient allegedly thrashed a junior doctor. The injured medic’s colleagues have been accused of roughing up the hospital superintendent, Dr O.P. Chaudhary, when he intervened.
A group of medics led by Junior Doctors’ Association (JDA) president Dr Rakesh Kumar met PMCH principal Dr N.P. Yadav on Wednesday and said they were not convinced with the “vague promises” made by the authorities.
Yadav said: “We are constantly trying to sort out the issues but the JDA is firm on demands that cannot be immediately implemented or are beyond our jurisdiction.”
He also said the committee formed by the health department to look into the charges levelled by Chaudhary on some junior doctors could take over a month to submit its report. Yadav heads the panel.
