Patna: The JDU marched up to the Election Commission on Wednesday, petitioning it to conduct the bypoll to the Rajya Sabha seat in Bihar that has fallen vacant after Sharad Yadav's disqualification.
A delegation, comprising JDU secretary general K.C. Tyagi, Rajya Sabha member RCP Singh, water resources minister Lalan Singh and JDU national general secretary Sanjay Jha, submitted the memorandum to the EC.
The team requested EC to fill the vacancy within six months as mandated by rules.
"Vice-President and Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu disqualified Sharad from the Upper House and also informed the EC in December last year. We have come to the EC with the request that polls for the seat be conducted before June 6 as vacancies need to be filled within six months," Tyagi said.
Sharad, who had been accused of anti-party activities after he opened a front against Nitish when the chief minister rejoined the NDA last July, had moved the Delhi High Court for relief after Naidu disqualified him
"The commission is under legal obligation to hold election to the Rajya Sabha seat within six months from the date of the vacancy," the memorandum said.
The delegation also noted that Naidu had disqualified Ali Anwar on similar grounds too, and while the EC filled his vacancy, it did not Sharad's.
Reacting to the JDU petition, Sharad said: "They (JDU leaders) are perturbed. They have nothing left in Bihar. They don't have any issue or cause left with them. They hold me responsible for the political harm they have suffered, so they want to ensure that I also suffer."
