Patna, June 3: A man, failing to get any relief from Sushil Kumar Modi, today reached chief minister Nitish Kumar’s janata durbar with a plea of his abducted father’s rescue.

However, Sanjeev Kumar (34), a deputy general manager (electrical) with National Thermal Power Corporation, Barh, had to return disappointed after receiving similar assurances from Nitish.

Sanjeev’s younger brother, Ajit Kumar (28), a scientist working in the Department of Atomic Energy, Heavy Water Board, Mumbai, had visited deputy chief minister Modi’s janata durbar on May 21.

After travelling a distance of 250km and waiting for almost four hours, Sanjeev’s turn came and he handed over his application to the chief minister.

“Sir, I am running from pillar to post for information about my abducted father, Baikunth Modi. Kindly do something,” said Sanjeev.

After reading the application, Nitish asked him to meet director-general of police (DGP) Abhayanand. On his instructions, Sanjeev visited the DGP and handed over the same application. Sanjeev said: “Sir, it’s been almost a month since my father was abducted. But there is no clue about his whereabouts. Our family is in great pain and every passing day is killing us.”

On the morning of May 5, Baikunth was abducted from Navinagar village while on his way to Panchnandan Dham temple in Jamui block. Earlier, the deputy chief minister had assured Sanjeev’s brother that the police were trying their best to recover Baikunth.

After listening to the complaint, Abhayanand said: “We are doing all that we can to find your father. As you know, we have made some arrests as well. We are trying our best but I cannot give you any guarantee. I am aware of this particular case.”

An FIR was lodged on May 6 at Jamui police station (the case number 95/13). Sanjeev’s family members received two ransom calls on May 5 and 6 respectively demanding Rs 30 lakh for Modi’s safe return.

Before leaving the durbar, Sanjeev said: “It is ironic that the police have failed to find my father even in a month. It raises a serious question on the efficiency and functioning of the state police.”
