Crime hits new high, cops twiddle thumbs - Cases remain unsolved with claims of probes being on

Two cases of murder, an alleged kidnapping and numerous high-profile thefts sent shockwaves through the city but there have been no breakthroughs yet. The cops, however, claimed to be close to solving the cases. Joy Sengupta of The Telegraph takes a look at cases and their developments

Murder

When did it happen?

October 8 afternoon.

What happened?

An elderly woman, Manju Devi (55) went out of her home around 11am without informing family members. The family came to know about it later and started a search. Her body was found around 10pm the same day.

Where did it happen?

Her body was recovered from a spot near Hardinge Park. She had been stabbed repeatedly. Police recovered the knife used in the crime and a towel from the spot.

Family version

They said Manju had left home without telling anyone. They added that she was a bit mentally challenged. They had come to know about her disappearance around 12noon after which they started a search for her.

Police version

The police said they are clueless.

Case status

Unsolved.

Missing

When did it happen?

October 19 morning.

What happened?

Kumar Vijay Krishna (aged around 40), a junior doctor at PMCH, disappeared mysteriously in the morning with his cellphone switched off. Police recovered his motorbike parked near one of the pillars of Gandhi Setu.

Where did it happen?

Krishna left on his bike from his Boring Canal Road house and went missing.

Family version

The family lodged an FIR with the local police station suspecting he might have been abducted by a contractor and taken to Begusarai. The family said it could be a case of forced marriage.

Police version

No breakthroughs till now.

Case status

Unsolved.

Rape and murder

When did it happen?

November 2 morning.

What happened?

A teenaged girl was attending a religious gathering when she left the programme telling her parents that she had to attend to nature’s call. Her half-nude brutalised body was recovered later.

Where did it happen?

The incident occurred near Mahuabagh village.

Victim’s family version

The girl’s family claimed that their daughter had been gang raped and strangulated to death. An FIR was lodged.

Police version?

The cops claimed to have identified two attackers, stating that there were four persons in all and one of them was having an affair with the girl and he laid a plan to trap her.

Case status?

On Wednesday, Nandji Prasad, the Parsa Bazaar police station house officer, claimed they were closer to solving it. Remains unsolved.

Thefts

When did it happen?

During Chhath (between October 25 to October 30).

What happened?

Thefts occurred at many localities in Patna.

Where did it happen?

The thefts mainly took place in areas of Kankerbagh and Kadamkuan. The house of a station house officer of Shahjahapur police station at Bahadurpur was among those burgled.

Victims’ version

All the victims said they had gone to their ancestral homes or to their relative’s place to celebrate Chhath and enjoy holidays. They came back to see their homes burgled.

Police version

The cops claimed that one person, who could be associated with the thefts, has been arrested and is being interrogated. They have pointed at a gang based in Hajipur.

Case status

Unsolved.
