Bhagalpur, Jan. 17: Government Railway Police (GRP) have initiated steps to impose Crime Control Act on arrested members of the drug rackets operating on trains. The move is aimed at saving railway passengers from the clutches of nashakhurani (drugging) gangs, which rob them of their belongings on running trains.

Superintendent of railway police (SRP), Jamalpur, S. Premlata, yesterday sent the proposal of imposing Crime Control Act on one Sarwan Sahani, lodged in Special Central Jail, Bhagalpur, to district magistrate Narmadeshwar Lal.

The Bhagalpur GRP station is under Premlata’s jurisdiction.

Sources said Sahani, who hails from Lailakh hamlet in Bhagalpur and drugged passengers on the Kiul-Sahebganj loop section of Eastern Railway, was arrested in July last year.

Sources added that the GRP had started four speedy trials against him for his involvement in different cases of nashahurani in the recent past.

“He was our prized catch and we have started tracking down around 25 of his associates in and around Lailakh and Sabour. Some of them are inside the jail, while others are out on bail,” a source said.

He added that the accused usually obtains bail and in absence of solid evidence, courts acquit them.

The SRP office at Jamalpur (Munger) also initiated to impose Crime Control Act on Monoj Mandal, the prime accused in the robbery on the running Howrah-Jaynagar Fast Passenger train in June last year.
