Police looked the other way when suspended RJD legislator Nawal Kishore Yadav came to attend the proceedings of the Upper House on the third consecutive day on Tuesday.

A strong contingent of the security personnel was present on the premises to ensure foolproof security to the members of both the Houses — Assembly and the Legislative Council.

Patna city superintendent of police Jayant Kant and deputy superintendent of police (secretariat) Manish Kumar were also present there.

Yadav, who is a named accused in a case related to illegal sale of liquor from a sweets shop of a close relative, however, looked complacent and was in no hurry to enter the House.

While the constables conducted the requisite security check of his SUV, the senior policemen looked the other way.

All the senior police officers preferred to keep mum on the arrest of the MLC despite charges under non-bailable sections of the IPC slapped against him. “Kindly spare me. Contact my bosses for any official comment on the arrest of the VIP in the case,” said investigating officer Upendra Kumar Singh.

The station house officer of Secretariat police station G.D. Tiwary echoed similar views. “It is the responsibility of the investigating officer to obtain arrest warrant and take action accordingly,” said a senior police officer.

Every officer passed the buck on the MLC’s arrest.

An IPS officer posted in a Naxalite-hit district, however, said: “If the police can’t arrest the accused in Patna, how can one expect strict action against the Maoists in far-flung areas, where there is no basic infrastructure at the police station.”

The Secretariat police on November 26 had conducted a raid on a sweets shop located in front of Vikas Bhavan and seized a number of bottles of India-made foreign liquor.
