Drink up the heat
Chandrali Mukherjee does not like summer even though she realises it’s a reality. She has come up with “cool” ideas to brave the heat wave. The Class XII student of DAV, BSEB, has decided to indulge in her favourite pastime.
“In summer, I read a lot. What else to do? Going out in the sun will be suicidal. Better, I keep myself confined to my cool room and read my favourite books,” she says.
Wait, there’s a little more to it. “If my room happens to have a decent stock of juice and soft drinks and a fabulous book, I don’t mind the summer at all,” says Chandrali.
Swimming trick
Syed Muhammad Saquib hates summer. So he has decided to remain under water (as much as possible) this summer. The Class XII student of Patna Muslim School says: “Swimming is the best activity to avoid the summer heat. I regularly go to Bankipore Club for swimming. It’s refreshing and healthy.”
That’s one way to combat the heat, what about the plan to stay cool at home?
“I sprinkle some water over the bed before going to sleep. I soak a towel in chilled water and cover my head with it. That keeps me cool. Fruits and nimbu pani give me energy and summer gives me the licence to savour gola and ice cream,” says Saquib, beaming with a wide smile.

Powder in socks
Alankriti Jain has a cool tip for everyone her age. “Drink lots of glucose. That will certainly keep you cool,” says the Class VI student of St Joseph’s Convent High School.
Alankriti is well prepared for the hot days in school. “My shoes and socks become very sweaty. Therefore, I put powder in my socks to control the sweat. And, the moment I return home, I use rose water to wash my face,” she says, adding that the best time in summer is during the holidays when she can spend “hours in the bathtub”.
Games at Ganga ghat
Alok Kumar has a new address during the summer months — the Ganga ghat. He makes sure he goes to the river bank almost every day. The Class XII student of PN Anglo Sanskrit Secondary School has a whole group of friends, who he can go out with.
“It is great fun to go to the Ganga ghat on summer evenings with friends. There you are greeted by cool air. Sitting on the staircase and chatting with friends is real fun. And in the evenings, we play chhooa chhui. Boy! Isn’t it fun?” he says.
So, doesn’t he get tempted to take a dip in the cool Ganga water? “Sure, who would miss such an opportunity?” says the teenager, ready to take a plunge in the river.
Beat sweat with water
Swati Anand has come up with a simple solution to combat the heat this year. The Carmel High School student says: “Drink lots of water. Wear light, loose cotton dresses.”
At home, she makes sure she takes healthy food.
“I have nutritious and non-fatty meals. Fruits are a must in summer,” she says.
What about the night routine?
“I take a shower. That keeps me cool,” the Class X student explains.
The teenager certainly knows the fashion of summer and the mantra to be fit in the season.
