Green audit to save heritage

An entire day for sports threw up emotions of all kinds on the Women's Training College campus last Friday.

On the field were close to 200 BEd students. With loads of enthusiasm, they put in their best in all the events - discus throw, javelin, shot put, orange race, needle and thread race, skipping race, catwalk race and relay race.

The faculty members took part in few of the events too.

Patna University vice-chancellor Y.C. Simhadri graced the occasion as chief guest and inaugurated the sports meet.

Addressing the future teachers, he said: 'Sports help in mental, physical, emotional and social adjustment. It helps develop the mind and body and also concentrate in studies. I would urge all of you to take part in sports because it will help you lead a healthy life.'

Rupam Kumari bagged the honour of the overall champion, while Vivekananda House was adjudged the best house at the sports meet. Tagore House won the kabaddi championship and Riya Ganguly of Vivekananda House bagged the best player award.

Jessie Modi, the principal of Women's Training College, said: 'Academics and sports are both important in a student's life. Our college gives importance to both.'

Close study

Virasat Humari Sampada Hai, an outreach programme held by Central Research Laboratory (of the science department in Patna Women's College), concluded after a fortnight on Saturday.

The college students were divided into six groups and each had to hand in a presentation on their research work.

The girls worked with the findings of surveys conducted at the Nalanda ruins and Pushkarni Lake in Vaishali. They collected water, soil, and vegetation samples for the analysis. Migratory birds were watched and studied. The different types of trees, shrubs, herbs and wild species were counted and a green audit also conducted.

The samples were collected and brought to the Central Research Laboratory for analysis. During the fortnight-long programme, the students formed a human chain to request others to come forward to save heritage.

R.K. Sinha, head of department, zoology, Patna University, was the chief guest on the day of presentation.

Addressing the students, he said: 'Your research should be recognised and must be sent to the best possible journals. All the presentations were excellent.'

Sister Marie Jessie, the college principal, also encouraged her students and urged them to make proper use of the research laboratory and come up with innovative work.

Lucky throw

Among its various activities, Patna Women's College inaugurated the 13th Valentine Throwball Championship, a two-day sports tourney, on what else but Friday the 13th.

The tournament was open to college and Intermediate students. By Saturday, the hosts bagged the first prize. DAV Public School, BSEB, and Veena Vidya Niketan were placed second and third, respectively.

Principal Sister Marie Jessie and chief guest Devendra Kumar handed the students their certificates and medals.

Poetic mood

St Xavier's College of Education organised a Kavi Goshti on Monday. Sixteen BEd students from the institution's different houses attended the programme.

The students got the chance to explore their creativity as they composed poems in English and Hindi. Then, they recited their creations before their peers.

Preeti Sinha, a faculty member, said the students were judged on their presentation of subject, audibility, accuracy in pronunciation and poise.

Kajal Thakur stood first, while Prakash Kumar and Manisha Kumari were joint second in the Hindi group. Sabnam Bano bagged the third prize.

In English, Manisha Prasad, Sana Fatima and Niharika Richard bagged the top three positions.

Awarding the students, college principal Father Thomas Perumail said: 'Poetry isn't every one's cup of tea. Writing and expressing your own thoughts in the form of poetry is an extraordinary thing.'

Last week, St Xavier's College of Management and Technology organised Synergy 2015, a corporate meet, on its premises last Saturday.

Several dignitaries were invited from the corporate world to share their views with the students. Sameer Nagpal, vice-president, marketing and sales, Airtel, and Arun Agarwal, the president of Bihar Industries Association, were among them.
