First day, live on stage
The mass communication department of Patna Women's College organised a guest lecture for its students on Saturday. Key speakers Nav Gurukul secretary L.K. Agrawal and senior journalist Sanjay Kumar Sinha spoke on "How to combat stress in life".
While motivational speaker Agrawal emphasised on the functioning and control of mind and ways to balance the mind and heart, journalist Sinha said nothing was permanent in life, even failure. "One must always have a backup plan," he said.
College principal Sister Marie Jessie urged the students to interact with the guests and raise queries during a question-answer session. Many students did.
Second-year student Jyoti Sinha said: "I am glad that apart from theoretical knowledge, the college gave us a chance to interact with people who have made it big in the field of journalism."
Fresh act
Another freshers' day came and went by at Patna Women's College as the arts and vocational studies departments organised a show for the first-year girls last Thursday. The programme blended in it different cultures from various parts of the country.
English students performed to a mash-up of the latest Bollywood songs while students of the advertising department sang the 1990s hit song Chhoti si asha to thunderous applause from the audience.
The department of mass communication presented a dance drama on a college student's journey and followed it up with bhangra, the traditional Punjabi dance. Psychology student Sheetal Poddar showcased her karate moves. After her presentation, she said: "My faculty members and friends appreciated my performance. Participating in such art and culture events has helped me know my abilities."
The last performance of the day was from mass communication students who presented a skit on the "first day in college".
Sister Marie Jessie, the college principal, said freshers' celebrations were a must, as they helped find talents among the students.
Blood donation
At least 41 students from St Xavier's College donated blood at a camp on the campus last Thursday. College principal Father T. Nishant said the blood donation camp was held under the aegis of Kurji Holy Family Hospital as part of the college's efforts to contribute to society.
"This blood donation camp is held every year and students come in good numbers to donate blood," he added. "Even this year, 41 students participated in this cause."
The college's social awareness committee organised the camp and the students were no less excited.
"Some students were rejected after weight and haemoglobin test. After taking 41 units of blood, the medical team screened other students who could be eligible for the next camp to be held after a month," said lab technician of Kurji Holy Family Hospital Tabassum Praveen. "The students will get a donor card valid for six months. The collected blood units will be used for accident victims and pregnant women."
A donor cannot donate blood twice within three months.
"As a student, we cannot help everyone in need, so this is a good way to help those in medical emergencies,'' said bachelor of business administration student Alvin Samuel.
"Donating blood helps reduce heart disease risk and of cancers of the liver, lung, colon, stomach and throat," Sister Angela from Kurji Holy Family Hospital told the students.
Ramp show
The Centre for Mass Communication and Media Studies of Central University of South Bihar organised a freshers' party for the new students on August 5. Vice-chancellor Harish Chandra Singh Rathore presided over the event.
The senior students performed for the newbies. Among the programmes lined up were a ramp walk. First-year mass communication students Sakshi and Ayush Anand Shukla were declared Miss and Mr Fresher.
Vice-chancellor Rathore asked the students to work towards making the institution proud. "Our students are our ambassadors. The university's media department has performed significantly well with its limited resources," he said.
