Poll knowledge for new voters

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Election Commission of Bihar on Wednesday organised an awareness session-cum-workshop on the importance of voting at St Xavier's College and St Xavier's College of Management & Technology.

About 450 students attended the session from the colleges.

"The objective of this session was to encourage youth participation in the upcoming state elections and also to impart knowledge among them about voting rights and fair election practice. We also wanted them to know how the youth could play a major role in ensuring fair elections. Later, the youth will spread the same information among their contacts and encourage them to come forward," said Ershad Ahmad, a technical representative on special deputation by Election Commission of India.

He suggested that students apply online and enroll for their voter identity card and also encouraged others to follow the same practice. He mentioned mobile applications where students could find their names in the electoral roll, and also get election news.

The sessions also witnessed a musical performance by Ila Rawat, a faculty member from NIFT and founder of Patna Guitar Circle, and also by Nash Chandra, the founder of Blindfold Rock Band.

Kriti Singh, a student pursuing her Bachelors in mass communication said: "It is our duty to vote for the upcoming election and make a change. I will also motivate others to do the same."

Travel northeast

The department of geography (travel and tourism management) of Patna Women's College organised an exhibition on India's Northeast, to mark World Tourism Day last Thursday.

The students, as part of their assignment, displayed different models, handicrafts, artefacts, photographs, and posters depicting the characteristic features of the eight states of the northeast - Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. Indian Tourism, Patna, supported the exhibition.

College principal Sister Marie Jessie inaugurated the exhibition. She said: "The northeastern states of India - also known as seven sisters and one brother - have remained unexplored and the exhibition was an attempt to highlight this."

Shivani Kashyap, a student from the travel and tourism management , said: "The purpose for holding the exhibition was to highlight various natural, social and cultural phenomena of the northeastern states of India, which has the potential to attract tourists and promote growth of the tourism industry." The exhibition was organised under the supervision of Sister Rashmi, the head of geography department, and Amrita Chowdhary, the coordinator of the add-on course of travel and tourism management.

Blood for new life

St Xavier's College of Management & Technology organised a blood donation camp in collaboration with Kurji Holy Family Hospital at the college on Thursday to mark National Blood Donation Day.

The camp was organised by the social awareness committee headed by a college teacher, Mala Upadhyaya.

Sixty-three units of blood were donated in total.

There was great enthusiasm among students for the cause. One hundred and eleven students came to donate blood but only 63 got a chance. Forty-eight of these students could not donate blood because of health issues like low haemoglobin and low weight.

"Blood donors give people a second chance to life," said Upadhyaya. Anju Kumari a second year commerce student said: "By donating blood, we feel cherished and fresh as our contribution would come in handy."
