The violence at Patna College hostels has exposed the reality of poor control of the college and university administration on boarders.

On Saturday, the inmates of Minto and Iqbal hostels exploded bombs over a trivial issue leading to the injury of one student, Azad.

This year, the Patna College administration, in its effort to improve the academic atmosphere and get rid of students indulging in group clash or anti-social activities at the varsity, decided not to allot hostels to its students.

The decision led to protest as students staged demonstration and also paralysed academic atmosphere at the college. Coming down heavily on the protesters, Patna University officials asked the students to study without accommodation or leave the college.

However, the Saturday violence once again exposed the college administration’s poor control over students. The incident occurred when Azad, a student of bachelor of mass communication, clashed with four of his seniors — Aditya, Vijay, Santosh and Ujjwal — over some trivial issues. It soon resulted in a clash between two groups of hostellers and Azad received head injuries.

He was taken to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) and discharged later after medical assistance.

Patna College principal N.K. Choudhary said: “When some boarders entered the hostel premises by breaking the lock (in August), the college administration complained to the district administration for vacating the hostel premises from illegal occupants but no action was taken.”

However, the students and teachers are worried with growing incidents of clashes. A senior teacher of Patna College on condition of anonymity said: “To keep a tab on growing incidents of group clashes, both the district and varsity administration should strictly deal with the situation.”
