Patna: Rajkumari Devi, a.k.a Kisan Chachi, whose pickles have tickled the taste buds of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chief minister Nitish Kumar and superstar Amitabh Bachchan, has gone online.

Not only has she registered a website, www.kisanchachi.com, where customers can order from 16 varieties of pickles, but Rajkumari Devi - in her 60s - has also joined e-commerce platform VLE Bazaar to market her products.

The platform is an initiative by the central government to promote rural market products and encourage village entrepreneurs.

"We have entered online business because it is the demand of the time," Kisan Chachi told The Telegraph during Saras Mela here. "I have a website too where people can place orders and send the money into my bank account. We send the products by post.

"The pickle that we sell at Rs 200 per kg becomes Rs 400 a kg because of the postal charges," Kisan Chachi, a resident of Anandpur in Muzaffarpur's Saraiya block, added.

As people visited her stall, drawn to the wafting smells of mango, chilli, garlic, gooseberry, lemon and other pickles, Kisan Chachi said she is taking precautions against fake products by her brand name.

"When I got complaints about people misusing my name and selling their products, I thought and finally decided that the plastic jars in which we pack our pickles should have 'Kisan Chachi' embossed on the base. People should look for it while buying my pickles," she said.

Kisan Chachi got married at an early age and her husband Awadhesh Kumar Chaudhary used to sell kahini (chewing tobacco).

She entered the business quite late to make both ends meet and afford to send her son to school.

"I took training in various rural industries from scientists of Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Muzaffarpur district, but chose pickle-making as my business in 2002 as it could be started with very few resources and less money," Kisan Chachi said of her enterprising start.

She also learnt cycling and took her products to villages and Muzaffarpur city. Slowly business picked up. She also formed an all-women's self-help group, training other women and roping them in the trade.

Nitish felicitated her, Modi invited her to Gujarat. She also starred in one of the episodes of Aaj Ki Raat Hai Zindagi hosted by the BigB.

Currently her business is a cottage industry, but Kisan Chachi is thinking about installing machines to make and pack the pickles. Amarendra Kumar Chaudhary, her son, is at hand helping her.
