Patna University (PU)’s bid to conduct LLB Part III examination fairly by segregating the examinees across four centres triggered unruly scenes on Wednesday. Around 250 students boycotted the exam, citing that the varsity’s site showed one centre for all.

The students — all men — boycotting the exam demanded a centralised centre.

“The male candidates had to take the examination at Patna College, Patna Science College and BN College, whereas the women appeared at Magadh Mahila College,” said PU examination controller Binay Soren.

Bablu Samrat, a final-year LLB student, said: “On the university website, the examination centre for men was clearly mentioned BN College. But in the admit cards that the students received on Sunday, names of three colleges — BN College, Patna Science College and Patna College — were mentioned.”

Soren contradicted: “The varsity had decided to have separate centres so that they can check unfair means during the examination. Though BN College was mentioned on the website, the venue printed on the admit cards is final. Students should not have any problem in taking examination at different centres.”

The examination controller added: “According to regulations of the Patna University Act, there is no provision for a re-examination and the students will have to wait till the next year to take the final examination.”

The women candidates took the test at the Magadh Mahila College peacefully and were not part of the protest.

Later in the evening, the male candidates staged a demonstration at the PU administrative building and locked the main gate. Sources said when the students staged the protest, PU vice-chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh and other officials were inside the building.

Police personnel in large numbers were deployed at the building to avoid any untoward incident.

Around 300 students were slated to appear for the LLB examination, which will continue till April 7.
