Patna: Officials of the Mahatma Gandhi Central University, Motihari, which is witnessing tension for the past few weeks, on Saturday knocked the door of the district administration with a request to upgrade security arrangement on the campus.
A delegation of university officials comprising university proctor Brajesh Pandey, academic coordinator Anand Prakash and others met Motihari SP Upendra Kumar Sharma, the SHO of town police station and submitted a memorandum at the district magistrate's office.
Anand said: "Recently, a student Shakti Babu was assaulted by some people outside the university campus. After the incident, there is tension on the campus and we have requested the SP to set up a police picket."
Shakti, who was assaulted on Thursday, has lodged a complaint at the town police station against vice-chancellor Arvind Kumar Agarwal, proctor Brajesh Pandey and others claiming that the attack was planned by the university administration. A case has been lodged against the VC and other officials under sections 147, 148, 120 (B), 149, 341, 323, and other sections of the IPC.
The delegation which met the SP, informed him that some teachers and students were creating disturbance at the varsity.
Anand said: "Shakti was assaulted outside the university campus by some outsiders. How can the university administration be behind the attack? Some teachers and students want to disturb the academic atmosphere."
The SP assured the delegation of setting up a police picket.
The university administration has also decided to strengthen its own security arrangement by deploying private security guards. Last month, the university had decided to stop work from August 20 till September 5 after an assistant professor Sanjay Kumar was assaulted.
However, the teachers' association claimed that the university administration's decision to set up police picket is an eyewash.
Teachers' association president Pramod Meena said: "The university administration's claim that Shakti was assaulted as he was having some dispute with residents is not true, as many teachers and students who are from other states too have received threats."
However, due to ongoing struggle between the university administration and the teachers' association, the worst sufferers are the students and teachers.
A teacher said: "Due to the ongoing tussle between the varsity administration and some teachers, the academic atmosphere has been disturbed."
