On the occasion of the centenary celebration of the Patna Training College, Patna University vice-chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh announced that the institution would now be known as the Patna College of Education.

Sources said though the college completed its centenary in 2008, it could not celebrate the achievement that year. One of the oldest institutions of teachers’ training in eastern India, the college turned 105 on March 16. Singh said: “The varsity will upgrade the infrastructure of the college.”

Legislative Council Chairman Awadhesh Narain Singh inaugurated the celebration. Banaras Hindu University professor Harikesh Singh delivered the keynote address.

Disease warning

Students of JD Women’s College learnt about seasonal diseases against which they need to be on their guard during summer at a programme in their institution on March 14.

Organised by the National Service Scheme, the programme was addressed by Dr Diwakar Tejaswi. “Typhoid, dengue, hepatitis, diarrhoea, malaria and Japanese encephalitis are some of the common diseases during summer,” he said.

The doctor added: “It is easy to catch an infection during summer because of excessive sweating. Youths and children are most susceptible to diarrhoea. It can lead to other complications like abdominal cramps, loss of appetite nausea, weight loss and vomiting.” He added that personal hygiene was the best way to safeguard against the disease.

Focus on girl

Parents should be approachable so that their wards do not hide their problems from them, said Delhi-based journalist Vartika Nanda at a seminar in Sri Arvind Mahila College on March 15.

“Girls often hesitate to tell their parents about the incidents of molestation they face. But if they tell their parents about their problems, solutions could be found easily,” she added.

College principal Asha Sinha, and Prem Kumari, head, zoology department, were the other speakers at the seminar.

Colourful workshop

A gallery would be constructed at College of Arts and Crafts, Patna, said Anjani Kumar Singh, principal secretary to chief minister Nitish Kumar, at a painting workshop at the institution on March 10.

“The students of the college have been demanding an art gallery to display their works,” he said.

Patna University vice-chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh, who was also a guest at the event, said: “This is the only art college in the state. So work produced here needs to be showcased all over the state.”

Eighteen senior artists and 12 students took part in the workshop.
