CBSE rule tweak for Plus Two

Students eye better marks in stream, subject change nod

Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has spelt relief for students of classes of XI and XII finding hard to cope with their choice of subjects or elective stream of study.

The Plus-Two students can now change the stream/subject in the middle of the session though it comes with a rider - the written applications seeking permission for the same must reach the board by August 31.

CBSE has allowed this only for the 2015-16 academic year on the written request of several guardians.

In May this year, it had issued a directive according to which students of classes XI and XII could not change stream or subject mid-session.

"It was a relief when the school told us that our applications had been accepted and we would be allowed to change our subjects," said Kesha Singh, a Class XII student of St Karen's High School. She wants to drop biology from her physics-chemistry-biology combination and take mathematics instead. Like Kesha, many other students of Class XII were relieved at the board's decision.

Another student, Garima Nidhi, a Class XII student of Patna Central School, said: "In Class XI, I studied mathematics as an optional subject. But with the consent of the school and class teacher, I was allowed to attend computer classes. The previous notification worried me as I find it difficult to cope with mathematics. I find computers more interesting."

"From this year, we would start counselling of Class XI students to know in which subjects they are good at and would be able to score well. The board decision would be fruitful for students who apply for a change in their subjects or stream," said DAV Public School principal D.K. Ghosh.

According to the CBSE, Class XI students can change their stream as well as subject combination if they continue in the same stream. But Class XII students would only be able to change subjects available in the given stream, no change of study stream is on offer.

CBSE assistant secretary Arvind Kumar mentioned August 31 was the deadline for submission of applications for change in subject or stream of study.
