Grand Alliance partners JDU, RJD and the Congress today joined hands in hitting the Well of the Assembly, protesting against the new taxation laws to "rescue the tax cheats", a day after Nitish Kumar counselled his party's lawmakers to support demonetisation.

As the House assembled for the day, BJP members entered the Well, protesting the poor law and order situation and "victimisation" of the majority community members in the cases of riots.

Soon, the JDU, RJD and the Congress trooped into the Well, holding placards that read, "Adani, Ambani ka dalal, garib behal (the touts of Adani and Ambani are calling the shots while the poor are suffering)".

The ruling parties and Opposition nearly came to blows. Some climbed on the reporters' tables while others jostled. With din and disorder overtaking the House, Speaker Vijay Kumar Choudhary adjourned it for an hour to give the members the chance to calm their nerves.

But as the House reassembled at noon, it witnessed the same chaos. The Speaker again adjourned it till 2pm. Chief minister Nitish Kumar, who supports demonetisation, avoided the proceedings all through. His party members said the chief minister was opposed to the taxation laws, which the Centre has introduced to "rescue" tax cheats and big corporate houses operating in black money.

"Neither the JDU, nor the RJD or the Congress are opposed to action against black money or demonetisation. We are opposed to the manner in which the demonetisation has been implemented. But the new laws that the Narendra Modi government have passed proved beyond all doubts that the central government is involved in rescuing the tax cheats. The tax cheats whosoever they are, should be punished," deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav said outside the House.

While nothing was audible in the din of the House, BJP member Nand Kishore Yadav said outside the House: "The Mahagathbandhan components are confused on the new taxation laws. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's new taxation laws are tailored with the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGK) that promises big bonanza to the poor."

The ruling party and Opposition sat on protest shouting slogans and holding placards outside the House over respective issues after it was adjourned. As the House reassembled for the third time at 2pm, the warring Mahagathbandhan and BJP members hit the Well again, compelling the Speaker to adjourn.
