Patna, March 27: Use of Internet and computer science can be tools in the fight against corruption. A scholar put forth this view at the final day of the Research and Scholars’ Day at Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Patna.

K.K. Srivastava, the director of the institute, inaugu- rated the two-day meet on Saturday.

Chaired by R.S. Ramakrishnan of IIT-Patna, papers on computer science and information technology were presented today.

Asish Ranjan, a faculty member of BIT, Patna, presented his paper titled “Design of information system for improving development schemes in rural India”.

Ranjan’s research dwelt on how developmental work could be started in villages through the use of technological advancement. He said computerisation of accounts and details of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act can make the system transparent and curb corruption in such schemes.

Anish Kumar, another faculty member of BIT, Patna, presented a paper on the use of new technologies in developmental work, explaining how the bearing capacity of roads could increase if fly ash is used in its construction. It is also economical and durable, he said.

Today’s session was marked by presentations by scholars of mechanical and production engineering under the chairmanship of Subrata Kumar of IIT-Patna.

Subrata, along with B.K. Sharma of National Institute of Technology, Patna, was the chief guest at the inauguration on Saturday.

Faculty member of BIT, Patna, M.A. Hassan’s presentation on Bingham fluid flow in complex geometrics showed how properties of non-Newtonian fluids could be analysed. Fellow faculty members Souman Mandal, Kapil Dev Prasad, V.K. Mandal and others also presented papers.

The two-day event allowed the students of the institute to interact with scholars, gain from their experiences and discover what made them stand out from the rest.

Srivastava later said: “Students and engineers should devote more time to research work. Not only does it improve their efficiency but productive research can also be useful for people.”
