A clerk was arrested on Monday evening for taking bribe from MR Women's College students in lieu of providing mark sheets.

The accused, Ramashankar Jha, however, was released on personal bond.

Prompt action by Lalit Narayan Mithila University vice-chancellor (VC) Saket Kushwaha helped in nabbing Ramashankar, after the principal of the college refused to take action despite a written complaint by the students.

The students said they lodged a complaint with principal Vidyanath Jha stating that Ramashankar had been demanding Rs 50 for issuing documents.

When the principal didn't take action, the students approached the VC. The VC set up a two-member team comprising the dean, students' welfare, Kedar Prasad Sinha and college inspector (arts and commerce) Shyam Chandra Gupta.

The members reached the college on Monday evening and found the clerk collecting Rs 50 from each student for distribution of mark sheets. He was caught in the act and handed over to police. A case was registered.
