Students learnt about who is known as a “black child” in China and which state in India is famous for spices at a quiz contest on Friday.

The event, along with a poster-making competition, was organised on the occasion of World Tourism Day by American Corner.

Three teams comprising three students each — from BBA third and fifth semesters of Zakir Husain Institute and PGDM of Institute of Business Management (IIBM) — took part in the event.

While they managed to answer quite a few questions put to them by quizmaster Jayanti Ghose, some of the posers left the students, and the audience, scratching their heads.

For example, which is the most famous festival of Mysore? (Answer: Dussehra) In China, what terms are used for first-class and second-class berths in trains? (Answer: “soft seat” and “hard seat”) Which country gave the Statue of Liberty to United States? (Answer: France, after US became independent in 1776). For each question, the quizzers got 10 seconds to answer.

Those of you who are still wondering who a “black child” is, here’s the answer: the second child of any couple is known as the “black child” in China. As the norms regarding population control was enforced 1979 onwards, families with a second child were disallowed from registering for any government jobs or benefits.

Kerala is the state famous for spices in India. A major exporter of pepper, it also produces cinnamon, clove, ginger, vanilla, nutmeg, rosemary, oregano and bay leaf.

The fifth-semester BBA students of Zakir Husain Institute won the quiz.

The event was held at the auditorium of IIBM. A poster making competition was also organised. Its theme was conservation of water.

“In my poster, I have highlighted the importance of water conservation. I think if we set an example by doing it now, the future generations will follow it,” said Kritika, a BBA third-semester student of Zakir Husain Institute.

Shweta Gour, director, American Corner, said they would organise such events from time to time. “There are only five American Corners in the country. The one in Patna has a rich library that students can take benefit of. They should visit the library regularly.”

Quizmaster Ghosh also tried to make the students aware of the importance of water conservation. “At my home, I always try to conserve water in whatever ways I can. The water that I have used in cleaning vegetables, I also use for watering plants.”
