Govt plan to beat malnutrition
Patna (PTI): The government would draft a nutrition policy to cut down malnourishment rate in four years. “The government is working on the plan,” principal secretary of social welfare department Amarjeet Sinha said.
“Emphasis in the policy would be to fight problem of malnourishment through Manav Vikas Mission (human skill development mission). The draft of the nutritional policy is ready and it would see light of the day soon,” he added.
The status report of the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS), 2013, found that about 2.3 crore children in the country up to six years of age are suffering from malnourishment and are underweight. Bihar is the worst sufferer where 50 per cent of the children were found underweight.
Mob kills beggar
Nawada (PTI): Criminal thrashed Doman Manjhi, a Dalit, in a locality in Nawada on Sunday, police said. Suspecting him to be a thief, people of Mirzapur near the railway tracks, overpowered Manjhi while he was urinating and mercilessly beat him up as a result of which he died on the spot, Town police station in-charge Prakash Sinha said. The body was sent for post-mortem. A case has been lodged in this connection. The victim used to reside near platform number two of Nawada railway station with his family members and earned his livelihood through begging, the officer said.
Eve-teasing
Patna: Shastrinagar police on Sunday nabbed one Dilip Kumar Jha involved in a case of eve-teasing. Sources said Jha used to pass lewd comments at women and girls going for morning walks. Based on the complaint lodged by the wife of a bank employee, who Jha targeted, the cops raided Naveen Park at Shastrinagar and arrested Jha. He is the son of a retired police officer.
Girls saved
Bettiah: Some residents rescued two teenaged girls living in a missionary in Banu Chhapar locality of Bettiah town after the duo tried to end their life early on Sunday. The two girls were reportedly brought to the so-called missionary, Mahila Shikshan Sansthan, a few days ago by an unknown woman. Before the police, the girls accused the missionary authorities of misconduct. Police have registered an FIR against the in-charge of the home.
Boy suicide
Patna: Abhijeet Kumar, a Class VII student of a school on Gola Road in Danapur, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his AG Colony home on Sunday. The boy’s father, Jitendra Narayan, a a government school teacher, said his was room locked from inside.No suicide note was recovered.
Leader dies
Patna (PTI): Noted freedom fighter and CPI leader Prabha Sharma (93) died at a private hospital here on Sunday after a protracted illness, party sources said. Influenced by her freedom fighter father, Banarsi Singh, Sharma joined the freedom movement and participated in the Quit India Movement of 1942. She also worked for the welfare of women, and joined CPI in 1946. She had also been president of Bihar Mahila Samaj, the CPI women’s wing. She was jailed several times during the freedom movement. Her last rites will be performed at Simaria Ghat on Monday in Begusarai district.
