Judicial custody for former MP

Siwan: Jailed former MP Muhammad Shahabuddin was remanded in judicial custody on Thursday for 13 days in connection with the murder of Rajiv Raushan, a businessman in Siwan town shot dead on June 16 this year.

Rajiv was the only eyewitness to the murder of his two brothers, who were abducted in August 2004.

In Rajiv’s murder case, an FIR was lodged against three persons, including Shahabuddin and his son Osama Shahabuddin. Chief judicial magistrate in-charge Prem Shankar, after hearing the case on Thursday, remanded Shahabuddin in judicial custody.

Bengal girl found in Ara

Patna: A Class IX girl kidnapped from Bengal a fortnight ago was recovered from Ara in Bhojpur district on Thursday. Police said Ashraf, a resident of Bhojpur district, had kidnapped her when she was on way to school in Serampore, around 55km northeast of Calcutta. A senior Government Railway Police officer said a joint team intercepted Ashraf at Ara railway junction and rescued the girl. The girl told the police that she was taken to Delhi.

Gun factory bust

Munger: Police on Thursday unearthed eight illegal gun factories and caught five persons. Twenty-one country-made pistols, 20 magazines and equipment used for manufacturing firearms were recovered in the raid.

Central varsity

Patna: RJD MP Pappu Yadav on Thursday congratulated the Union government for passing the Central University (Amendment) Bill, paving the way for setting up the central university in Motihari in the name of Mahatma Gandhi. The amendment was passed on Wednesday.

Ignou exam

Patna: The term-end examination of Indira Gandhi National Open University would start from December 1. Examinees can download their hall tickets by visiting the university website, www.ignou.ac.in.

Man dead

Hajipur: Ram Kumar Rai, a cement supplier, was shot at in Raghopur, Vaishali, on Thursday. He succumbed to injuries on way to Patna Medical College and Hospital.

Tobacco ban

Patna: The high court division bench of Justice R.K. Dutta and Justice Ravi Ranjan on Thursday asked the government to reply within 10 days about steps taken to implement the ban on the sale of tobacco products in the state.

Agro fund

Patna: The Centre on Thursday released the second instalment of Rs 179.69 crore to Bihar under the National Agriculture Development Scheme in the current fiscal.

Docs visit

Patna: A delegation of doctors associated with Bihar Opthalmological Society met additional director-general of police (law and order) Alok Raj on Thursday over a case of ransom.

Law Day

Patna: The law department of Central University of Bihar celebrated the 65th National Law Day on the Gaya campus on Wednesday.
