Gangsters, rebels held outside state
Patna: At least 15 gangsters and Maoists carrying rewards on their heads have been arrested from outside the state during a special operation launched by the special task force in the past year.
The figures released by the state police headquarters on Thursday revealed that three criminals were arrested from Nepal, two from Gujarat, four from Jharkhand and one each from Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh respectively. The arrested persons were involved in several incidents of crime and Naxalite violence in the state.
Encounter inquiry
Gopalganj: Gopalganj superintendent of police Vinod Kumar has started an inquiry into a complaint that alleged then Barauli station house officer Manoj Mahto had killed two persons in a fake encounter in 2008. Kumar, confirming it on Thursday, said the family members of the deceased had lodged the complaint.
Health meet
Gaya: A two-day annual conference of Hypertension Society of India would be held in Bodhgaya on October 19 and 20. Hypertension Society of India, Gaya branch, would host the conference where eminent hypertension specialists from Patna, Ranchi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Coimbatore, Jaipur, Ludhiana, Delhi, Chandigarh, Chennai and a doctor from US will discuss different topics like hypertension among youth, elderly and pregnant women besides, management of hypertension in emergency. Organising committee member Ramsevak Singh on Thursday said at least 35 different topics will be discussed during the two-day conference. It will be an honour for Gaya, as eminent cardiologist A.N. Rai would take over as the national president of the society during the conference.
Cyclone damage
Patna: Bihar State Power (Holding) Company Ltd deputy general manager (public relations) H.R. Pandey on Thursday said North Bihar Power Distribution Company and and South Bihar Power Distribution Company made their assessment of damage by cyclone Phailin. Pandey said 3,187 and 204 electric poles of 11KV and 33KV, respectively, were damaged. Trees fell on 11KV and low-tension lines at 2,789 places across the state, while 33KV lines were damaged at 503 places, he said, adding that 11KV and low-tension lines were snapped at 4,078 places and 33KV lines snapped at 259 places. Similarly, transformers of various capacities such as 231 of 63KVA, 262 of 100KVA and 129 of 200KVA were damaged during the cyclone that lashed on two consecutive days of heavy rain on Sunday and Monday.
Dal leader
Patna: Rishi Mishra has been nominated for the post of general secretary of the state unit of the ruling JD(U) in Bihar. Mishra on Thursday thanked senior leaders of the party for nominating him for the post.
Gang busted
Patna: A gang of six criminals involved in theft and chain snatching incidents in different areas of the state capital was arrested on Thursday. The arrests were made from the Rajapul area under the SK Puri police station area. One motorbike, Rs 14,000 and a gold chain have been recovered from them.
Law & order plans
Patna: Police will hold a meeting of officers of all police stations of the state capital on Friday. The meeting will be held at Lalit Bhavan. It is for the first time that cops of all police stations of the capital would attend the meet. The agenda of the meeting would be ways to improve the law and order condition in the capital.
Protest
Patna: Member of Jan Abhiyan, Bihar, took out a protest march on Thursday expressing their anger against the recent judgment of Patna High Court in which all the accused of Laxmanpur Bathe massacre were acquitted. The participants demanded stern punishment for those involved in the case, a Jan Abhiyan press note said.
