Protesters held near Nitish home

Patna: Around 1,000 people hailing from the Kosi belt were detained on Wednesday after they entered the prohibited area and demonstrated in front of the official residence of chief minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday.

Patna senior superintendent of police Manu Maharaaj said the protesters were detained for violating the rules. Social activist Rajeev, who is fighting for the rights of the Kosi flood victims, said the victims of Supaul, Saharsa and Madhepura had gathered near the chief minister’s residence to vent their ire against the failure of the state administration to rehabilitate them. The protesters were subsequently taken to different police stations and detained for several hours. A complaint was lodged with the Secretariat police station for violating the rules and holding demonstration in the protected zone.

Ashfaque Karim bail

Patna: A high court division bench on Wednesday granted bail to Ahmad Ashfaque Karim, chairman and managing director, Katihar Medical College and Hospital. Karim had challenged his arrest in connection with the disproportionate assets case lodged by vigilance besides challenging the cognisance taken by vigilance court in Patna under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Assault case

Patna: Former Rajya Sabha MP Mangani Lal Mandal deposed before a judicial magistrate Jyoti Prakash in a case related to intimidation and assault on Agamkuan resident Ashok Kumar Mishra on Wednesday. Two other accused, Abhishek Ranjan and Animesh Ranjan, sons of Mandal, also appeared before the court.

Poll helpline

Patna: District magistrate N. Saravana Kumar on Wednesday announced the helpline number for voters to get information regarding polling booths and voter list. Patna district magistrate said the number, 0612-2233344, will become active from March 6.

Rights notice

Patna: The state human rights commission has served notices on district magistrates of 15 districts and assistant director of the social security for their failure to constitute district level committees for redressal of grievances of the senior citizens. The commission has asked the officials concerned to send their reply before April 30.

Welcome move

Patna: Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee vice-president Prem Chandra Mishra on Wednesday welcomed the poll schedule announced by the Election Commission of India for the general elections and exuded confidence that Congress, would form the government at the Centre on the basis of its performance and achievements of 10 years of the UPA’s rule.

Nomination

Chhapra: Two nomination papers were filed for Saran teachers’ constituency on Wednesday. Chandrma Singh of BJP and Rajaji Rajesh from RJD filed their nomination papers.

Workshop

Patna: A state-level workshop on violence against women was organised by Centre for World Solidarity on Wednesday. Social welfare department secretary Rajit Punhai spoke about the schemes being implemented by the department for the welfare of women.
