Collision claims 3 lives, driver flees

Jamui (PTI): Three persons were killed in a head-on collision between an autorickshaw and a pick-up van near Ranhan village in Jamui district, police said on Tuesday.

While two persons died on the spot on Monday night, another succumbed to his injuries while being taken to Patna for treatment. The deceased have been identified as Ashok Vishwakarma, Babloo Vishwakarma and autorickshaw driver Mohammad Qayum.

“They were residents of Mahadev Simaria village in Jamui district and were on their way to Patambar village. The driver of the pick-up van fled with his vehicle after the accident,” said Sikandara police station house officer Ramavtar Paswan.

The bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

Mishap after ceremony

Ara (PTI): Two persons were killed and four others were injured when a pick-up van turned turtle near Dharhara bridge in Ara on Tuesday. Police said two persons, identified as Mukesh Yadav (36) and Pramod Kumar (16) from Patila village in Patna district, died on the spot. “All six were returning to their village after attending an engagement ceremony at Motitola village in the district. It seems the driver lost control of the speeding vehicle leading to the accident,” said Town police station house officer PK Mishra. The injured have been admitted to Sadar hospital in Ara.

Contraband cuffs

Motihari (PTI): A contraband smuggler was arrested on Tuesday from the India-Nepal border in East Champaran district with 1kg of brown sugar. Sashastra Seema Bal officers, acting on a tip-off, nabbed the smuggler identified as Nawal Kishore Prasad. The contraband he was carrying was worth Rs 1 crore in the international market, an SSB officer said. Nawal had brought the consignment from Manipur for delivery in Birganj, Nepal. A cellphone and Rs 3,000 was also seized from him.

High train speed

Patna: East Central Railway (ECR) has decided to run the Sampoorna Kranti Express (12393/94) at a higher speed to overcome the problem of frequent delays on the Patna-Delhi route. Sources in the ECR on Tuesday said the train would now run at 130kmph. At present, it runs at 110 kmph.

Peace study

Patna: The school of social sciences of Indira Gandhi National Open University has launched a masters programme on Gandhi and peace studies. The last date of admission to the programme is June 20.

Extortion charge

Bhagalpur: The district unit of the Congress on Tuesday lambasted police for its alleged failure to arrest the criminals who threatened senior party leader Sadanand Singh and demanded extortion of Rs 15 lakh.

Guesthouse

Patna: Chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi would inaugurate a tourist guesthouse at Mahishi near Ugratara temple in Saharsa district. The date has not been decided yet.

New branch

Patna: Punjab National Bank general manager S.K. Mullick inaugurated a new branch at Mairwa in Siwan District on Tuesday.

Patna: The Congress on Tuesday criticised the roadmap of the Narendra Modi government and called it anti-poor.
