Road rampage after girl death
Muzaffarpur: Villagers in Gobarshahi went on the rampage on Tuesday afternoon in protest against the death of a 14-year-old schoolgirl, Gazala Parveen.
She was crushed by a speeding truck on the Muzaffarpur-Patna National Highway 28 near Gobarshahi under the jurisdiction of Sadar police station in the afternoon.
Angry people in the area set on fire a diesel tanker and damaged several trucks and buses in retaliation.
Police could bring the situation under control after almost three hours of road blockade.
Close to 1,000 vehicles were stranded on the national highway, one of the busiest roads in north Bihar, for
three hours.
VC bail plea rejected
Muzaffarpur: The vigilance court of Muzaffarpur on Tuesday rejected the bail petition of Jai Prakash University, Chhapra, vice-chancellor Dwijendra Gupta. Vigilance judge Ajay Kumar Srivastava heard the pleas in view of alleged financial irregularities committed by Gupta and turned down the petition. The vigilance department had named Gupta in a chargesheet of omission and commission.
Youth drowns
Chhapra: A youth, identified as Akash Chaudhary, from Barrackpore in Bengal drowned at Mahua Ghat under Doriganj police station on Tuesday morning. The victim had come to the Ismailpur to a friend’s house with another youth. Akash and his friends went for a dip in the Ganga around 9.30am on Tuesday when he drowned. The body has been sent for post-mortem.

Patna: Bihar Pradesh Yuva Congress acting president Kumar Ashish on Tuesday said three secretaries and presidents in nine Lok Sabha constituencies have been appointed with the consent of the youth wing president, Amarinder Singh Raja. Pawan Kumar, Kumar Rohit and Prakash Kumar Singh have been appointed the wing’s secretaries.
Body found
Gopalganj: Police on Tuesday recovered the body of a pregnant woman from Harihara village under the jurisdiction of Phulwaria police station. Officers said a syringe with some purported toxic substance was found from the spot. The woman’s identity has not yet been ascertained. The police suspect the woman was killed somewhere else.
Jab at Centre
Patna: The Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee vice-president, MLC Ramchandra Bharti, and party general secretary Binod Sharma on Tuesday termed the Centre’s decision to bring gas subsidy under the tax net anti-people. The leaders also attacked the Centre for increasing petrol and diesel prices at a time farmers have been hit by the recent earthquake and thunder squall in the state.
Squall relief
Patna: An important meeting of office-bearers of Bihar Pradesh Mahila Congress was held at the party’s state headquarters, Sadaquat Ashram, on Tuesday. The meeting was chaired by Mahila Congress president Amita Bhushan. Mahila Congress spokesperson Veena Karn said it was decided to send a team to the districts of Purnea, Araria and Katihar, affected the worst by the thunder squall of April 21. The team would help distribute relief materials, besides packets of beaten rice, jaggery, sattu and biscuits among the affected people. The women’s cell also discussed vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s proposed visit to the state. It is expected that Rahul would visit Bihar in May.
