The science and information technology society of Magadh Mahila College celebrated the run-up to the Ozone Day with painting, slogan-writing and essay competitions.

International Ozone Day is celebrated on September 16. The weeklong celebrations at the college started on September 9 and continued till September 15. It aimed to spread environmental consciousness among the students.

Priya Kumari, a student of the physics department, won the first prize for her essay on the depletion of the Ozone layer and its effects. Anamika Rashmi, a Part-III BBA student, was the winner of the spot-painting competition on the topic “Green revolution”.

Subhra Sinha of the mathematics department took home the prize for slogan writing with her smart catchphrases.

Magadh Mahila College principal Dolly Sinha spoke on the effects of Ozone depletion and measures to protect the layer in the atmospheric layer that keeps the ultraviolet rays at bay. Students also recited poems and performed a skit to spread awareness about the environment.

Patna Women’s College also organised an oath-taking ceremony for the new members of the eco task force on Ozone Day. The new members formed a human chain and took an oath to protect the environment.

Hindi debate

St Xavier’s College and St Xavier’s College of Management and Technology, Digha Ghat celebrated Hindi Divas by organising a debate.

Hindi Divas is celebrated on September 14. The debate was organised on the eve of the Divas and its topic was “Yuva peedhi evam Hindi ki prasangikta (Youth and the significance of Hindi)”. The academic committee of the two colleges, chaired by Jaismin Kantha and assisted by Priyanka Sinha and Joel D’Cruze, helped organise the debate.

Md Asad Khan, Sagar Joy, Anural and Amarjeet Kumar spoke for the motion. They emphasised on how Hindi is the national language of the nation, connects the youth to the subaltern and inspires nationalistic thoughts.

Vishal Singh, Sandeep Raj, Ankit Verma and Ashutosh Kumar spoke against the motion.

They claimed Hindi is not relevant anymore in the era of globalisation. English had become the most important language. They claimed that leaders of subaltern groups like Dalits, such as BR Ambedkar and Kancha Ilaiah, had also favoured western and English education for their uplift

Anural and Amarjeet were judged the best speakers. The team speaking in favour of the motion won the debate.

Foundation day

Students, teachers and officials celebrated the 42nd foundation day of JD Women’s College by letting their hair down.

Education minister P.K. Shahi addressed the event on September 13. He asked the college authorities to get accreditation from National Assessment and Accreditation Council (Naac). “Those colleges that do not get the Naac accreditation will not get funds from University Grants Commission. Only 130 government colleges in the state have applied for Naac accreditation. The remaining colleges should do it soon.”

Amarjeet Sinha, principal secretary, education, stressed on the need to change the 20-year-old syllabus of Magadh University. “It is necessary to revise the syllabus from time to time,” he said.

Nandiji Kumar, the vice-chancellor in-charge of Magadh University, said JD Women’s College would soon get the permission to start postgraduate courses in the science stream.

Freshers’ welcome

Senior students at National Institute of Technology, Patna, welcomed their juniors with song, dance, mime and laughter at a freshers’ welcome.

Yashu Arora was adjudged Mr Fresher while Noopur Bhargav was declared Miss Fresher at the party organised by budding engineers of the institute. Govind Rathi and Ambika Gautam bagged Mister and Miss Eve awards, respectively.

M.M. Choudhary, dean, students’ welfare, inaugurated the function. He said such events would encourage the newcomers to interact with the seniors. He asked the students — freshers and seniors — to co-operate with each other. The students also enjoyed a dinner party.
