The state government has taken a slew of measures to ensure repair and replacement of burnt transformers within 24 hours in urban areas and 72 hours in villages.

To start with, the government has floated tenders for inviting bids from interested parties for constructing 13 new transformer repair workshops in the state. The proposed workshops are likely to become operational within six months. At present, the state has seven workshops to repair distribution transformers. The capacity augmentation of the existing facilities would be done at the workshops in Chandauti and Katihar.

Bihar State Power (Holding) Company Ltd has also issued tenders for outsourcing the transformer repairing work. H.R. Pandey, the deputy general manager (public relations) of the company, said: “We have floated tenders to purchase new transformers.”

The government has directed the officials to construct godowns for transformers at divisional levels. The aim is to keep transformers ready for replacement, Pandey said, adding that the decisions were taken during a vide conference between chief secretary Ashok Kumar Sinha and district magistrates and other senior officials of the energy department and the power holding company.

During the meeting, power company officials were also directed to install additional transformers or replace the old ones with high-capacity transformers at areas from where complaints are frequent.
