The computer science engineering department at the Patna campus of Birla Institute of Technology organised a seminar on quantum computing, in technical collaboration with Patna chapter of Computer Society of India, on Wednesday.

Speaking at the event was C.T. Bhunia, former director, NIT Arunachal Pradesh. He explained how quantum computing takes advantage of the strange ability of subatomic particles to exist in more than one state at any time. The way the tiniest of particles behave, he said, operations are much quicker and use less energy than classical computers.

A.K. Nayak, national secretary of the society's Patna chapter, presented the fellowship award to Bhunia, while B> T-Patna director B.K. Singh welcomed the guests and presented mementos as a token of appreciation.

Students at the seminar expressed deep interest in the talks. Computer science student Manoj Das said: "The session was very enriching as we learnt about the various aspects of quantum computing - how with use of quantum idea we can generate computers which can work faster and with the best features."

Research pitch

Nalanda Open University vice-chancellor R.K. Sinha on Thursday underlined the importance of research to teaching during a three-day workshop on "Regional workshop on research based pedagogical tools" in Patna.

The Central University of South Bihar's Centre for Biological Sciences organised the seminar at its Patna campus. Sinha, popularly called the Dolphin Man for his conservation efforts for the Gangetic dolphin, spoke at the valedictory session of the three-day workshop. He said teachers must show keen interest in research and innovation. Studying books and giving lectures based on information gathered from books is mere fulfilment of a teaching job, he added.

He said: "Usually teachers in Bihar complain about lack of resources for conducting research. But I did a record 20 projects in my 40 years of teaching career, in spite of the hurdles that came in my way. There were lack of amenities and resources in my university, still I could do my projects efficiently and got exciting results. The reason I could succeed in research and innovation was my strong will and enthusiasm to find something new - the work on dolphins was one of them."

Arun Kumar Sinha, professor-in-charge, Patna campus, Rizwanul Haque, head of the Centre for Biological Sciences, Asheesh Shankar, bioinformatics faculty member, also shared their views.

Law talk

The Central University of South Bihar's School of Law and Governance organised a workshop on public interest litigation at the Patna campus on Friday. Public relations officer Mohammad Mudassir Alam said the daylong workshop included a series of lectures, training sessions and covered aspects related to PILs.

The newly elected student leaders of the College of Commerce, Arts and Science met principal Tapan Kumar Shandaliya and proctor Manoj Kumar on Friday to urge the administration to carry out infrastructure work, including digitisation of the college library, regular classes, smart classrooms and sports facilities.

The team was led by union president Vikash Kumar. He said: "The student representatives urged the principal to create more infrastructure facilities such as a gymnasium. We have assured the principal of providing our support."
