Munger: The condition of the two-and-a-half-year-old girl rescued from a 45 feet-deep bore-well after a 30-hour ordeal on Wednesday evening deteriorated on Thursday morning after her face and eye lids swelled up.
She is now unable to open any of her eyes because of the swelling. Doctors said they would take a final call on whether she should be sent elsewhere for treatment after evaluating her condition on Friday morning.
"When I examined Shanna (as spelt in medical records on Thursday. She had earlier been referred to as Shannao and Soni) in the ICU at Munger sadar hospital early this morning, I found a major swelling on her face and her eye-lids," said Dr Yogendra Prasad Bhagat, the Munger civil surgeon.
"She is unable to open her eyes now. After going through her CT scan and pathological reports this evening, the medical team at Munger sadar hospital will decide on the future course of treatment. If her condition improves by evening, we will continue treating her at the ICU here. But, if it deteriorates further. we will refer her to Bhagalpur or Patna."
When her condition deteriorated on Thursday morning, hospital authorities sent her to a private CT scan centre to conduct a CT scan of her head. The report will be available later.
"We fear internal head injuries owing to the 45-ft fall. The CT scan and pathological reports will throw light on the condition of her head," said Dr Bhagat. "As she was without water and food for 30 hours in the bore-well, she is dehydrated. All blood tests, including kidney- and liver-related tests have been done. Their reports will be available by this evening."
Dr Rayees, an eye surgeon at the Munger sadar hospital, said medicines were administered intravenously after he checked the girl's eyes in the morning. "I hope the swelling subsides soon," he said.
The civil surgeon said the doctors wants to know the real cause for the swelling on the girl's face.
"My daughter, Shanna, is now talking to me normally," said Sudha Kumari, her mother. "She keeps calling us. 'Papa come, Mummy come,' she keeps saying. She has also been demanding food orally. But, the doctors are feeding her intravenously for safety reasons."
The civil surgeon had a memorable moment on Thursday when the girl smiled at him. "Shanna smiled briefly when I asked her to smile during check-up this morning," Dr Bhagat said.
