More than 500 doctors from Bihar will take part in a rally to be held at India Gate in Delhi on June 6 to protest against recent attacks on doctors countrywide, the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Bihar, announced it on Tuesday.
Senior vice-president Bihar, IMA, Ajay Kumar, said: "Repeated assault on doctors show that their safety in Bihar was at its lowest. It requires strong action on the part of the government. To seek attention of the states and the Centre, we are going to hold a rally in Delhi where more than 50,000 doctors from across the country would participate."
According to IMA records, from October 2015 till date, more than 30 doctors have either received threat calls, faced murder attempts, or some violence at work in Bihar.
Ajay added: "We demand a 'protection act' for doctors. It should have stringent provisions of punishment as attack on hospitals and doctors not only affect us but also the lives of thousands of patients and the health delivery system. We demand scrapping of The Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act, 2010, promulgated by the Centre and in its place bring in The Bihar Clinical Establishments (Control and Regulation) Act, 2007. The Bihar Act should be amended to increase the jail term for offenders to more than seven years."
