Patna: The CBI, which is probing the Muzaffarpur shelter home sexual abuse case, released Rahul Anand, the son of the arrested prime accused Brajesh Thakur, on Sunday after interrogating him for about 11 hours at its camp office in the district headquarters town around 70km north of Patna.

Anand was picked up for interrogation from his residence at 7.45pm and released at 4am on Sunday. Earlier on Saturday, he was summoned by the CBI at the locked shelter home on Sahu Road where he was questioned for about three hours.

Soon after his release, Anand told reporters that he had faith in the CBI and hoped justice would be done to him and his family. He admitted before the CBI officials about the sale of the land in Muzaffarpur to meet expenses.

The CBI officials also inquired from Anand about the government advertisements given to the newspaper of which he is the editor-in-chief. The CBI sleuths also inquired about the newspaper's employees and their salaries.

Sources said Anand became nervous when the interrogators sought to know about the shelter home and the newspapers running on the same premises. The CBI officials showed him the documents seized from the office premises of the shelter home and the newspapers.

On Saturday, a team headed by deputy inspector general (DIG) Abhay Kumar, who is leading the probe, reached the Balika Grih along with experts from the central forensic science laboratory and searched the premises, including the rooms in which the girls were living.

More than 100 files were seized as evidence during the search. "The CBI officials are scrutinising the seized documents," a source said.

In a related development, 22 undertrial prisoners were shifted from the medical ward of Shaheed Khudiram Bose Central Jail - where Brajesh is lodged - to the general wards on the directive of senior prison department officials. The police and administrative officials, who raided the jail on Saturday, were surprised to see Brajesh moving about in the visitors' area.

"Brajesh was relaxed as if nothing has happened with him. He got perturbed for a while after seeing police and administrative officials in the prison. It seems that he had no inkling of the surprise checks in the jail," said a police officer who was part of the raiding team.

The officers seized two handwritten pages containing names and mobile phone numbers of 40 people, including a minister, several politicians, bureaucrats and some doctors of Muzaffarpur. The raiding team stumbled upon another page containing the details of money withdrawn from Brajesh's NGO's bank accounts.

The call detail records of the mobile numbers of a few VIPs found on Brajesh's list are with the police and indicate long conversations.

Two mobile phones were recovered from the veranda of the jail hospital where Brajesh was being treated till Saturday. He was shifted to his jail cell on Sunday morning on the directive of senior officials of the home department.
