Zoo to get four yellow anacondas
• ALIPORE: Alipore zoo will get four yellow anacondas by March. The snakes will come from the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre for Herpetology in Chennai, said zoo director Asis Kr. Samanta. The yellow anaconda (Eunectes notaeus) is a non-venomous species found in South American countries like Paraguay, Bolivia, Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina. In exchange for the new guests, Alipore zoo will gift the Chennai park eight snakes - four monocled cobras and four banded kraits.
Train rescheduled
• HOWRAH: The New Delhi-bound Poorva Express, scheduled to leave Howrah station at 8.05am on Friday, will leave at 11.05am because of a delay in the arrival of the corresponding Howrah-bound train, an Eastern Railway official said on Thursday.
Woman found dead in Canning
• CANNING: A woman was allegedly strangled to death in Canning, South 24-Parganas, on Wednesday night. Manisha Das's husband and in-laws were arrested after her family members lodged a complaint, alleging torture over dowry. Manisha, 21, was married to Sashikanta seven months ago. On Wednesday afternoon, Sashikanta told Manisha's parents that she had fallen ill. When Manisha's family members reached her in-laws' home, they found her dead, police said.
Salt Lake death
SALT LAKE: A man in his late 20s was found dead in GC Block, Salt Lake, on Thursday morning. A preliminary probe revealed that Joseph Ghosh had hanged himself to death. Ghosh lived alone in a rented house while his wife stays in Guwahati for professional reasons, police said. She had come to Salt Lake a few days ago and allegedly came to know about her husband's extra-marital relationship. She returned to Guwahati two days ago, the police said. The cops suspect Joseph was suffering from depression.
Border arrests
• BASIRHAT: Four Bangladeshis were arrested in Basirhat on Thursday morning for crossing the border illegally. Interrogation revealed they were illegal immigrants from Satkhira district in the neighbouring country. They had entered the state four months ago and gone to Bangalore, police said.

• CHINSURAH: The Bandel government railway police arrested seven criminals from Garifa and seized four sharp weapons and three knives from them.
Woman dead in rail station
SHALIMAR: A 45-year-old woman died at Shalimar station late on Wednesday. Police said Shakila Khatun, 45, a resident of Chennai, was in Bengal to visit one of her relatives in Shibpur. She was waiting at Shalimar station to board the Gurudev Express when she took ill. She was declared dead at a private nursing home.
Suicide
BAGUIATI: A 45-year-old Baguiati resident has killed himself with poison, police said. Abhijit Roy was taken to a hospital in the area late on Wednesday. He died around noon on Thursday, the police said.
Rail rejig
CALCUTTA: Jaya Varma Sinha took over as the new principal chief commercial manager of South Eastern Railway on Thursday. She was earlier the senior deputy general manager and chief vigilance officer of South Eastern Railway. She has been the divisional railway manager of Sealdah as well.
Civic body event
Calcutta: The civic body will distribute sweaters, tiffin boxes and water bottles to students of Calcutta Municipal Corporation primary schools at a programme at Uttam Mancha on Friday afternoon. Mayor Sovan Chatterjee will be present on the occasion.
Science congress
KALYANI: The three-day second Regional Science and Technology Congress (Southern Region) began at Kalyani University’s APJ Abdul Kalam auditorium on Thursday to explore new inventions and ideas from quality researchers. The science congress was inaugurated by state correctional services minister Ujjwal Biswas and Kalyani University VC Sankar Kumar Ghosh. More than 400 young researchers will present their findings on physics, chemistry, mathematics, medical science, environmental science, geology, botany, zoology, physiology, fisheries science, technology, and sociology among other subjects.
Mock parliament
NIMPITH: Muragachha Government College in Nadia became the champion in the Presidency Division Youth Parliament competition 2017, held at the Sri Ramakrishna Ashram in Nimpith, South 24-Parganas. The division-level event was organised by the state parliamentary affairs department. The college will now represent the Presidency Division at the forthcoming state-level youth parliament competition.
Woman with live cartridges
DUM DUM: A woman was detained at Calcutta airport on Wednesday night after three live cartridges were found in her hand baggage. The woman, a US citizen, was scheduled to take a flight to Doha on the way to the US. Three pistol bullets were found in her bag during security scan. She could not produce documents for the cartridges and told officials that the bullets belonged to her friend who was in the US and had the required licence. The friend was contacted and he mailed a copy of the licence. The lady was allowed to go on Thursday morning but the bullets were seized.
Dacoity in Polba
Polba: An armed gang raided two houses and two shops in Polba, Hooghly, and fled with gold and Rs 20,000 cash. The gang turned up at the house of Shyamal Karmakar, a bank security worker, in Polba on Wednesday night and forced him to hand over the keys of the almirah at gunpoint. They cleaned the almirah of all valuables and went on to raid two others shops and a house. The Chandernagore police commissionerate has started a probe.
CMC project
golf garden: The Calcutta Municipal Corporation will build a drainage pumping station at Golf Garden. A tender inviting bids for its construction was floated recently. Sources said the pumping station would help reduce waterlogging in the area.
Doc interview
Calcutta: The Calcutta Municipal Corporation will hire a gynaecologist, an anaesthetist, a cardiologist and a radiologist for its maternity homes through walk-in-interviews. The interviews will be conducted from 11am on December 18 at the CMC headquarters on SN Banerjee Road.
Road repair
MUKUNDAPUR: The civic body will soon start repairing a stretch of Mukundapur Road, sources said. The road will be strengthened so that it doesn’t wear off easily.
