Calcutta, Dec. 14: The St. Xavier's University, Kolkata, Bill, 2016, is likely to be tabled in the Assembly tomorrow, paving the way for the university to be established.
The "self-financing private university by the name of St. Xavier's University" will come up at New Town, the bill says.
A higher education department official said the university would be like any of the seven other private universities that have come up since Mamata Banerjee came to power in 2011.
The original plan was to set it up as the first government-aided minority university on a public-private partnership model.
"The government will help the university with funds and other things but not as a partner. It will be outside the bill's purview. We have agreed in principle," Father Felix Raj, the principal of St. Xavier's College, had said in October.
But the official made it clear that the university would have to raise funds on its own like other private universities.
"We are thankful to the chief minister for taking the initiative to give St. Xavier's a university status," Father Dominic Savio, rector of St. Xavier's, said.
"It will give us the opportunity to extend our education to more people not just from the city but also from the rural areas. We will be present in the Assembly when the bill is tabled tomorrow."
