Veteran actor Santu Mukherjee passed away in Calcutta on Wednesday evening. He was 69. The actor was not keeping well for the past few months. Santu will be remembered for his contribution to Bengali cinema, having acted in Sansar Simante, Ganadevata, Kalankini Kankabati, Bhalobasa Bhalobasa and many other acclaimed films. Santu, whose daughter is actress Swastika Mukherjee, was a well-loved face on the small screen as well. With dad for company, Swastika had cut her maiden Rabindrasangeet album Amar Mukti Aaloy Aaloy in 2017.
Metro services disrupted
Metro services were disrupted on Wednesday after a New Garia-bound train was stuck in the tunnel between Shyambazar and Sovabazar stations. The air-conditioned rake left Shyambazar around 3.05pm. The rear coach was still on the platform, and the rest of the rake had entered the tunnel, when it stopped. The motorman in the front cabin could not fix the problem and signalled the guard in the rear cabin to take the train back to the platform. “One of the circuits was unable to draw power and the brakes got locked,” said an official. The brakes were fixed and the empty train left Shyambazar around 3.20pm, said Metro spokesperson Indrani Banerjee.

A woman has lodged a complaint against her neighbour, accusing him of trying to molest her minor daughter inside a godown on Rabindra Sarani on Tuesday, said police.

A woman, who was allegedly raped in 2012, was found dead in a drain next to her house in Gosaba, South 24-Parganas, on Wednesday. Her family members alleged that a youth who was arrested in the connection with the rape had murdered her.

Body found in pipe
The decomposed body of a man was found inside a concrete pipe near BG Press in Karunamoyee around 9am on Wednesday. The man has been identified as Subir Goswami. He was homeless and had taken shelter inside the sewerage pipe that had been lying idle, police said. Residents of the area alerted the police after the pipe started emitting stench.
Condolence meet
The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, will hold a condolence meeting on March 12 to commemorate the death of former power minister Sankar Sen, who was a teacher at the Shibpur institute in its earlier avatar as a government engineering college. Sen was a power minister in the Left Front government. The condolence meeting would be held at the institute hall.
