Siliguri, Dec. 17: Teachers, officers, employees and students of Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya (UBKV) today postponed their plans for a sit-in before the vice-chancellor’s residence to protest against his decision to remove registrar Parimal Sarkar from his post.
The move follows the sudden departure of vice-chancellor (VC) Mrinal Kanti Majumdar for Calcutta on Saturday. The agitation was supposed to begin from today.
“Since our movement is against the VC’s decision, we have postponed the demonstration that was to be held in front of his residence,” said Mrigendranath Ghosh, the secretary of the UBKV Officers’ Association. “We will however, continue with our protests on the campus.”
The registrar was released from his post by the vice-chancellor on December 4. Soon, the officers’ association, UBKV Teachers’ Council, Sramik Karmachari Samiti and the Cooch Behar district SFI joined hands to protest against the sacking.
Teachers’ Council president Prabir Mukherjee today criticised the vice-chancellor for going off to Calcutta. “We consider this an act of sheer irresponsibility; instead of trying to end the stalemate, the VC left for Calcutta. He did not even inform the administration or the university officials before leaving.”
The vice-chancellor could not be contacted.
