Two Trinamul supporters were killed in two separate road accidents while returning home after attending the party’s Martyrs’ Day rally in Calcutta on Friday afternoon.

In the first incident, Trinamul supporter Bikash Tudu, 28, was killed and at least 52 others injured when a chartered bus carrying party supporters back to Purulia lost control on NH6 and fell in a roadside ditch near West Midnapore’s Kharagpur town on Friday evening. The accident took place amid heavy rain.

Police said Trinamul supporters were returning to Bandowan after attending the party’s Martyrs’ Day rally in Calcutta.

Local sources said the driver apparently lost control while approaching the bridge over the Rupnarayan river.

“Nearly a few hundred metres ahead of the bridge, the speeding suddenly lost control and fell into the roadside ditch. But it is not clear how it happened,” said one of the injured Trinamul supporters.

Local people rushed to rescue the passengers and informed the police. The injured were rushed to the Midnapore Medical College and Hospital, where Tudu was declared brought dead. CMOH Soumyo Shankar Sarengi said most had orthopaedic injuries.

“It appears poor visibility because of heavy rain probably led to the accident as the driver failed to see the curve on the road,” a police officer said.

In the other accident, Kutubuddin Mondal, 32, a resident of Haringhata, Nadia, was killed by a train. The police said he got off the bus at the locked rail gates and went close to the tracks to urinate when he was hit by the train. He worked in Malaysia and was home on vacation for a few days.
