Kohima, Oct. 27: The state, which falls in a high seismic zone, is gearing up for disaster management with training for State Disaster Response Force in full swing at Toluvi village near Dimapur.

The first batch to be trained are the jawans from the 9th IRB.

The training team is from Toluvi Home Guards Training Centre. The resource persons consist of five people who were also sent by the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority to Coimbatore, especially for disaster management training.

The seven members of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) from Guwahati will also impart training to the Naga jawans.

Speaking about the progress of the trainees, inspector Rajesh Ranjan of NDRF, said they are pleased and even surprised by the skills of the IRB jawans. Admitting that theory-wise, though the jawans are not very quick, in practical they have surpassed expectations.

The NDRF team lauded the IRB jawans saying they are young, fast and smart. Citing that even during leisure time the jawans were still practising, the NDRF team said the effort and dedication of the jawans is commendable.

The jawans are being taught the medical terms for parts of the human body and for skeleton. The jawans are being trained on topics that include the concept of disaster management, emergency medical system and medical first responder, incident scene assessment, infectious disease precautions, human anatomical references, basic life support and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, emergency child birth, oxygen therapy, earthquake, fire and welfare service.

The Disaster Management Act, 2005, has made statutory provisions for the constitution of NDRF for the purpose of specialised response to natural and manmade disasters.

According to Section 45 of the act, the force has to function under the general superintendence, direction and control of the National Disaster Management Authority and under the supervision of director general of NDRF.
