A central Calcutta trader has reported the loss of gold ornaments and cash from his locker in a nationalised bank at Wellesley Park.

Although the matter came to light in the first week of June, Jahangir Alam waited for a few days to report the matter to police.

He lodged a complaint with Park Street police station on Sunday alleging that gold ornaments weighing around 2kg and some cash were found missing from the bank locker on June 7. He accused the bank of not acknowledging the theft.

Alam, a trader in the New Market area, has had the locker in the bank for years, police said.

On June 7, he found the locker empty. "He initially brought the matter to the notice of the bank. But when bank officials failed to act on it, he lodged a complaint," an officer of Park Street police station said.

Cops are going through CCTV footage but it is difficult to know what happened in the locker room as there are no CCTVs to maintain the privacy of customers, another officer said.

According to banking norms, a person is not bound to declare what he or she is keeping in the locker.

"As the bank doesn't have any record of the belongings inside the locker, there is practically no way to verify what exactly was in the locker and what went missing," the officer said.

Officers of Park Street police station have started questioning the bank staff to find out who all had access to the locker keys and who was in charge of the security.
